Nathan Clark certainly knows his stuff, but what I also appreciated was his ability to transfer his vast knowledge in a comprehensive and "easy to follow pattern" that didn't get a beginner like me lost. Delving into this world of computer programming was daunting, so I'm glad I found a book that not only explained but gave me many examples to try. This has whetted my appetite for more of this author's works and I'm looking forward to reading more of this series and ultimately becoming better informed and more practised in the fundamentals of programming.

The first C++ book whetted the appetite for more. That was my hope, that my mid-twenties son would get interested in the programming side of computers rather than just the gaming side. Success! He devoured the first C++ book in the series and now he's ready for the next steps. As a retired computer guy myself, I went through the book and found it super easy to follow. Hard to believe anyone with a degree from MIT could write something so user friendly! I'm excited to share this with my son and put him on the path to a more lucrative career!

Delving even further down the 'rabbit-hole' of C++ programming; this book is an excellent reference guide as well as teaching tool that acts as a step further in the programming process.There are plenty of tables and over 80 examples to show the work of the author as he teaches.These types of books can be extremely boring, but I find Mr. Clark's continuing efforts to mentor the reader on a subject that he has spent over 20 years around very interesting as well.Thank you!

This is the second book in a series involving C++. This book is meant for the intermediate level. Once again Nathan Clark is able to explain to a caveman what the heck C++ is about. It's a great follow-up to book one. Once again is examples are spot on. I say this to explain he doesn't go over the top in the examples. He keeps them straightforward to make it easier to get a grasp on the subject matter. This book covers everything from; Data types, to coding date and time.

I'm proud to say that I was able to follow this 2nd book on C++. I have read and learned from a large number of Nathan's books. He has guided me from a beginner into the next level of programming. I have become very comfortable with his style of writing and teaching. His books are well worth your time.

With clear examples the author describes the proper syntax used for data types. He goes through sizes of variables from literal and constants to showcasing exponential functions.The material is clear and concise. This book should be kept handy as a reference.

Nathan Clark’s extensive knowledge of software is revealed in this teaching manual. Spelling, punctuation, and the addition of hyphens would improve the narrative portion of this book. I liked the Date and Time example the best. You can choose from a total of 85 examples or try every one of them.

While useful for what I was trying to do (go thru C++ examples), I was dismayed by the number of errors in this digital edition; didn't the author have an editor, even a proofreader? Often, it seemed a table or text was copied from one place to another and then not properly edited or even reviewed; was Clark in a big rush to get the book out, or at least the digital edition? So, if you want C++ examples, try the book but beware of the many errors.

If you love fairy gardens, fairy lore or just think you might then you should purchase this book! Betty Earl does a wonderful job educating the reader in the history of fairies and how to attract them to your garden. She provides comprehensive information on miniature plants and how to care for them. Wondering how to decorate and furnish your miniature world? No worries she tells you how you do that too. Lots of gorgeous photos featuring every style of miniature garden you can imagine. This is a book I will read again and again.

If you are looking for extensive pictures to copy to start your garden, this is not the book for you. If you need good technical information, both for containers and for open space gardens, this is the book for you. Its as simple as that. I will confess to wanting the pictures, but wound up with a book that did teach me several things that I didn't realize, so I got the best book after all. Don't get me wrong, there are a few pictures, but the technical information is far more valuable in the long run. I used my own creativity, and now we have a green, healthy little garden with a resident fairy living in a teapot house, and my granddaughters are enthralled. Everybody's happy in our miniature world.

Great ideas for the fairy village i am building on a huge log in my front garden. It's full of holes and dips together with splits whete i can plant alpines.

This was a gift for my wife, she is thrilled with it and is looking forward to spring to get to really use it to set up her fairy gardens. Glancing through the book I find it very informative and with loads of excellent ideas. I may even try my hand at one or two settings. Nice book, nice binding and constructed well. I recommend.

This was a very useful book in looking for hints and pictures of fairy gardens. A good reference book.

I was really disappointed the book is very small with a big price. I would recommend that if your going to pay this much for a book that you get one that has more to offer.

Did not realize this was soft covered. Not enough instructions on how to make your fairy garden, i.e. plants, soil etc. Needed larger pictures. The book is not full sized.

Lots of pictures and ideas for planting. Very helpful for a miniature novice who has no idea where to start.

Young Frankenstein was released when I was 14 years old, and I have probably seen it 30 times over the years. Since I am so familiar with every scene and line, it was great fun to read about how it was all conceived. If you too are a big fan of the film, don't miss this opportunity to see into the mind of Mel Brooks and the rest of the cast and crew. It becomes obvious just how brilliant the combo of Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder really was, and how much Gene will be missed. Getting ready to watch it again. 😊

This is an enjoyable scrapbook, almost akin to a souvenir program from a roadshow engagement, but it’s not a bona fide volume on the making of the film, more a compendium of pulled quotes. If you’ve seen any of the supplemental documentaries on the making of this move, especially both included on the Blu-ray edition, then you’ll recognize a lot of the text within these pages. There’s a rather clumsy introduction from Judd Apatow where he attests to not being as funny as Mel Brooks, subtly implying the mantle was passed to him, wherein he also tries to tie Marty Feldman’s iconic portrayal of “Aye-gore” to the performances in the American version of “The Office.” That’s a connection I doubt anyone can see. The best parts of the book are the pictures, particularly some never before published behind the scenes shots. This is the sort of publication that ideally should be wrapped in plastic because anyone thumbing through it in a store can speed read the whole thing in under ten minutes.

A bit shorter than I'd have liked and it seemed padded by pictures and script segments. But overall it was fun to hear Brooks talk about the movie. Not a great deal of new info for fans who have already dug deep or listened to the commentary tracks on the YF DVDs. But his love for the film (and for the recently-departed Gene Wilder) shows through. Most of the principal cast has passed on by now, so it seems fitting that Mel would wax nostalgic about the movie at this time.

As a Young Frankenphile, I was excited when this book popped up on my "must read" list. My excitement was justified. It was great fun to get the inside "doo doo" on the behind-the-scenes production and development it took to get the movie to the screen and then insight into the characters, performers, production staff and, of course, Mel Brooks himself, from their own and others' perspectives. The only thing that made me go "RrrrrrrARRR!" was the relatively high cover price for a 183-page Kindle read that flew faster than a little girl launched through a bedroom window from a seesaw. Other than that, it gets a huge schwanschtucker up from this reader!

This is a nice coffee table book. I enjoyed reading about the making of one of my all time favorite movies. I also liked knowing more of the details about the hard work that went into making a black and white movie during a time when studios wanted everything in color. Fun fact: Mel Brooks briefly went to the same high school and college that I attended, though many, many years before me. The book has a lot of great pictures, both stills from the film and behind-the-scenes stuff, and a lot of interviews/anecdotes by others involved in the film's production.

This is a hilarious and nostalgic look at the making of Young Frankenstein. It details Mel Brooks childhood experience with James Whale's Frankenstein, his collaboration with the one and only Gene Wilder, his search for the perfect cast and crew, the editing process, and the movie's eventual release. He's a great storyteller and his love for the movie and the people that helped created it shines through every page. There are hundreds of images, and lots of quotes and insights from those involved -- of course the actors, but also the producer, the make-up artist, the musical director, and more. I really enjoyed this and would recommend to anyone who loves Young Frankenstein or Mel Brooks movies in general. It's a winner.

Entertaining reading about the making of the film. Plenty of stories from all the main players involved in the movie, plus some great insights and remembrances by Mel. I am a huge fan of this film and have enjoyed finding out more of what went on behind the scenes to get this incredible movie on the screen.

I almost laughed as much reading this book as I do when I watch the movie. Mail did a good job introducing this to all of the behind-the-scenes characters as well as the actors . Now I just wish the criterion DVD manufacture would put Young Frankenstein on their things to do list

Outstanding! Beautiful, heavy, nicely designed book. The introduction is excellent, and the brief intros to each play are concise and clear. All the plays are translated with the greatest level of scholarship. This is a book both for the lay reader and the thoughtful scholar -- challenging but accessible, and an overall intelligence that is lacking in so many books that have 'ancient history' focus.I consider this one of the best books I've gotten in a while, no matter what the category.

I'd say it's the best translation of the plays I've read so far -- with some clumsy bits to provide the exceptions.

This book is an excellent selection of most of the major Greek tragedies. The translations and notes are truly outstanding. I thoroughly enjoyed each of the plays.

Everything about the choices of translation is thoroughly explained. The poetry was a bit lost in some of the plays, if one was to compare it with older translations. So for if one is looking to create ancient theatre scenes, some other translations could work better.

Very detailed in writing in the introductions of this well-written book. Very well translated and clear with the writing of the stories aswell.

Astounding to reread these plays after 60 years and find the new translation to refreshingly new that it would seem they were written just yesterday!

Excellent edition of the classic Greek plays.

I saw the movie, and was instantly uplifted -- I had to look into it and find out if this was all a true story, or if it was "based" on a true incident and "prettied up" for the film, as some are. So I read both books -- this one and the one written by Monsieur Pozzo. It turns out that with very minor exceptions, the film is true to the story -- but this book goes so much deeper into it, especially into the author's background. I commend him for talking about it, and tempering his new "hero" status with the reality of his past, rather than hiding it. It makes the story and the relationship even that much more fascinating. If there was ever a lesson that one's history isn't their destiny, this is it. I'm a fan of what seem to others to be unlikely friendship. This one is as unlikely as it gets, and despite that, I believe that they not only changed, but saved each others life. I would recommend seeing the film first, for the basic story, but after reading the book, I watched it a second time, with an entirely new view of the author's character.

(The following review is largely my comment disagreeing with the one star, negative review by "E.T.")After seeing the movie, "The Intouchables," I couldn't believe that a person (Abdel/"Driss") so characterologically amoral would be able to change the way the movie pictured in such a short time. So I bought this book that he wrote for another perspective--and I was not disappointed; it gave that to me and I feel richly rewarded for having read it. (Now I'll start reading "A Second Wind" by Phillippe Pozzo di Borgo.)I recommend you see the movie first, bearing in mind that it's not a documentary but was inspired by the life stories of Phillippe Pozzo & Abdel ("Driss" in the film). The movie does have much more continuity than the book but at the expense of taking many liberties, short cuts, alterations of the actual facts and time lines. (E.g., Abdel/"Driss" worked with Phillippe for 10 years & about a year before Phillippe's first wife, Beatrice, died; Abdel did not play "matchmaker" for Phillipe's second marriage.) It does stay true to the unique and uplifting story of these two men.Although Abdel is not a skilled author -- I found his book fascinating because it was like spending an afternoon chatting with Abdel about his life before, during, and after his time with Phillippe: somewhat disjointed, organized by when something comes into his mind rather than being driven by a need to carefully, very orderly explicate beginnings, middles, and conclusions. Abdel's "style" gives a feeling of the unique reality of Abdel that a more polished version probably would never accomplish. This book's "Forward" by Phillipe expresses surprise that Abdel would open up so much and, IMO, Abdel's style of writing and content, what he covers or doesn't cover, conveys Abdel's ambivalence and views of the real person and his transformation that a more experienced writer couldn't touch.I'm a retired clinical psychologist; much of my last 20+ years of work was in the marriage & family area. I learned there's never just one "true" view of relationships; it always depends on who is telling the story. E.g., the child favored by one parent has a much different view of both parents than his/her sibling does. The "Rashomon effect"* actually exists: "The Intouchables" film gave one view of them, Abdel's and Phillippe's books give two others._______________________* The "Rashomon effect" in Marr. & Fam. work takes its name after Kurosawa's famous film in which 4 different people saw the same event yet each describes motivations, causes and effects in 4 completely different ways.

I thought this to be a good story. The author writes like he's telling you his story over a bowl of peanuts and a beer while sitting in a bar. His personality was both fun and aggravating. It ended rather abruptly but considering the author it's not surprising.

A frank, straight forward description of a life lived uniquely unfettered. A glimpse into a world otherwise unknown to people such as his employer. A story of friendship and love expressed in practical, unpitying simplicity and service. The story told by one two men, who despite having almost no common cultural experiences, found that their personalities meshed, significantly improving the quality of each other's lives. Excellent.

I loved the movie the Intouchables, and immediately sought out the book. It is such an interesting and random pairing of two very different people, and the fact that it is a true story makes even more amazing. The book dives more into Abdel's (Driss's character) background which is a little more complex than what is in the movie. Over the course of the book, you see him grow up, but also feel himself growing up. He doesn't romanticize his story, but rather tries to figure out what led him down that path and is pretty honest about who he is then and now. The friendship that the movie is based on isn't really discussed until the 2nd half of the book but by then it makes sense. Sometimes a interesting story is just about finding out that you are capable of more than you ever thought you could do or be regardless of what that ends up being. Abdel never had any expectations for himself or from others, so it is interesting to see his transformation when he is put in the position of being needed and wanting to be needed.

Definitely entertaining. I hope the movie lives up to the book. I expected this story to be sad but I felt like it was more about finding a unlikely friendship; with mutual respect.

Both my husband and I enjoyed this book very much. It is an easy read because the story is told straight forward. It moves fast and keeps your interest. It is a chance to have a glimpse inside a unique relationship. I had seen the movie and wanted to know the "true" story. The reality is somewhat different than the story presented in the film. We plan to see the film again since reading the book.Of real interest to me was the insight given into the mind and thinking of a "street kid". I was also struck by how pervasive American popular culture is. Abdel makes constant reference to American movie, tv and cartoon characters.I liked that it had a happy ending. Things could have certainly been much different for both the people in the story.

I enjoyed reading the book, although it was not what I expected. The story is only told from one perspective. It would have added to it if both of them had contributed.

This holiday break, I had the distinct privilege of reading Timi O'Malley's journey around the globe in discovering how the preparation and sharing of meals can contribute to our interconnectedness beyond all cultural, political, and spiritual differences. I am still digesting what I consumed while devouring "Consuming Love: the Joy of Sharing Meals." What I found so simple, yet so profound, is how LOVE is the basis for our interconnectedness while we are all in this life, on this globe, and sharing in the journey of self-awareness; seeking to find joy, find peace, and helping/caring for one another as we would ourselves. I am in awe at how simple these stories and lessons are, but also how powerful it is when we make the choice to remove ourselves from our entertainment screens (phones, computers, tvs) long enough to submit to the luscious moments of sharing our hearts with each other. Kudos! Thank you for making me take the time to reconsider what is truly important in this short life. Order, read, savor, and enjoy, my friends!

As soon as I bought this book I started reading it and couldn’t put it down. The author takes you with her on adventures throughout her life. She paints pictures where she goes to make you feel like you are right there with her. Now I will try to be more present at my meals with others, to listen more and talk less. After these stories I want to hear even more!

I was so engrossed in this book that I could not put it down. Rarely does a book pull so much at my heart strings that I cannot detach from the mesmerizing narrative and companionship of its pages. I found this book both inspirational and enlightening to my very soul. Each of the vignettes revealed a deeper truth that lifted my spirits and affirmed my gratitude for how love can be shared in innumerable ways, one form being through the sharing of food. The messages in this book are much needed reminders of what really matters in the chaos and craziness of modern life. Timi O'Malley's reflections are much needed and well timed gifts. Thankful for the timing of this bountiful novel.

This is an interesting story of discovery and about those that we meet along the way who guide and influence on our journey. A fabulous story told honestly and with humor. A wonderful gift. I can't wait for the movie.

This is a beautiful, easy to read, hard-to-put-down book. You gotta read it because it has so much soul-nurturing information and guidance. Quite honestly, I was surprised by the content because I thought it was going to be a formula for having positive meal times with family and friends, most likely with a not-so-gentle reprimand for putting our darn smart phones down during that time. It's not. It's the story/stories of Timi's love-filled journey through life--the good, the bad and the ugly--viewed from the perspective of sharing meals with others while staying connected to her heart and soul. She even includes recipes from delicious meals she shared with people all over the world. I almost bought the Kindle version, as is my usual habit, but the cover of this book is as delicious as the messages inside, and plus, I find myself picking it up to hold it and remind myself of the loving messages within, so I definitely recommend getting the paperback. Wow, Timi I had no idea.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Consuming Love. What a splendid title as the book intertwines consuming and sharing food with exchanging love with one another and releasing fear. The book is easy and delightful to read, and stories are heartfelt and genuine. Intermittent spiritual messages are brilliant and to the point. The flow and the stories in this book lighten the spirit as they nourish the intellect. Highly recommended.

About the Author

David Tanis has worked as a professional chef for over three decades, and is the author of several acclaimed cookbooks, including A Platter of Figs and Other Recipes, which was chosen as one of the 50 best cookbooks ever by the Guardian/Observer (U.K.) and Heart of the Artichoke, which was nominated for a James Beard Award. He spent many years as chef with Alice Waters at Chez Panisse restaurant in Berkeley, California; he ran the kitchen of the highly praised Café Escalera in Santa Fe, New Mexico; and he operated a successful private supper club in his 17th-century walk-up in Paris. He has written for a number of publications, including the Wall Street Journal, the Guardian/Observer (U.K.), Cooking Light, Bon Appétit, Fine Cooking, and Saveur. Tanis lives in Manhattan and has been writing the weekly City Kitchen column for the Food section of the New York Times for nearly six years.

I wasn't too sure what to expect with this cookbook. At first read through, I was pretty disappointed, but after reading through it again, I've changed my mind.If you're familiar with David Tanis' other books, stylistically this looks pretty similar. Reasonably big (sometimes quite big) black font, intros to each section, pages with quite a bit of white space, and a focus on executing simple recipes that taste exceptionally good. Some recipes are more like a picture with a suggestion of how to make it (like the Spanish garlic toast and beets roasted in their skin), others are quite detailed (kimchi and Moroccan Lamb Tagine).The organization of the contents is a little mystifying, as the vegetables do not proceed alphabetically (I think they're organized loosely by season), which makes it a little difficult to find what you're looking for just by flipping through the book. Beyond the vegetable section, there are also some great chapters dedicated to alliums, the importance of seasoning, and "kitchen essentials" which covers go-to recipes for easy noodles, broths, rice, etc.If you're willing to read through the ~460 pages, there is actually quite a bit of useful information here, and recipes that look familiar but actually are something a little different, like the phenomenal herb roasted chicken legs and the fennel al forno. On the other hand, there are also a lot of recipes that look familiar because they are familiar, like the miso-glazed eggplant. ...You may not need another recipe for them, or another giant cookbook that is a bit difficult to navigate.If you're looking for a cookbook that explains how to approach buying vegetables, how to care for them and store them, and how to properly prepare them to gain the maximum amount of flavor for the least amount of work on your part, Market Cooking will brilliantly meet those criteria. Especially if you're building a cookbook collection or buying for someone who wants to be a better cook/use fresh produce to better effect.

David Tanis continues to evolve, and I'm glad to have had the opportunity to be exposed to that evolution through his several books.This is a book of working with--focusing on--foods, rather than choosing a recipe, then finding the ingredients for it: Tanis is trying to explain the process of being able to keep an open mind about what’s for dinner, (for tonight or for the week), until you hit the grocery store, or the farmers’ market, or open your CSA box. In this large volume, he arms you with certain recipes that are memorable in their simplicity or in their concept. And, after studying all that’s included in this book, when you go to market and survey the foods in front of you, certain recipes will pop into your head.Has anyone ever asked you, “What do you like to cook?” or “What kind of dishes do you like to make?” or “What is your specialty?” Do you answer with “Italian”, or “Indian”, or “casseroles”, or something specific like that? If so, then this book is for you. This book will open your eyes and your mind to another way of creating your meals. Do you head to the grocery store after choosing a recipe from a book, and writing down the recipe’s ingredients? Then this book might help convince you to try it a different way.If you answer those above questions with “I create dishes with what looks best at the market”, or something similar, then you already understand the concept and philosophy of this book. If you have basic, tried-and-true, or classic recipes memorized and know how to twist and turn them, and make substitutions; if you have an understanding or intuition about what foods and tastes complement each other; if you have a sense of amounts; know how to salt; know when to add a pinch of sugar or a splash of vinegar or squeeze of lemon, then you may not need this book anymore.The conundrum here: If you are in the first boat, you may baulk at or not grasp what Tanis is trying to teach you. So, if you think you can keep an open mind and act the sponge, you really should give this book a try—even if you wait until you can find it at the library. If you are in the second boat, and if you still have room on your cookbook shelf(s), you will appreciate this book for its beautiful pictures, insightful words and inspiration. You will also find more than a few “keepers”.And if you have read and appreciated Tanis’ other books, know that this book will be familiar in a way. You will need to decide if you have had enough, or you want more. Me? I love reading his books, knowing that I will always find some gems; knowing I will always find inspiration. When I sit down with a Tanis cookbook, I know I am in for a few hours of thoughtful and peaceful reflection. And I always keep a notebook and pen at hand for jotting down my own ideas—or maybe as a means to help me memorize something that he said. Also, for those who are familiar with his other works: No duplication here! As you would expect, David Tanis continues to evolve.Some important observations:--He has favorite flavors/foods: All the alums, potatoes (but there are not that many potato recipes in this book for some reason), hot chiles—and all veggies. He says that vegetables “should never be an afterthought in a meal”. Should not be called “sides”.--Some of these recipes are precise, some are suggestive and I wouldn’t even call them recipes.--To an experienced cook, some of this information will be old hat, but may work to revive a memory or provide inspiration.--This is not a shallow book, neither is it overwhelming. All that's included is within the scope of anyone interested in food, any experience level.--It is a beautiful book.Some of my “keeper” recipes and ideas from this book:--Japanese Scallion Custard--leeks should always be cooked until soft, err on the side of more cooked--outer romaine leaves saved to be chopped and sautéed in butter or olive oil--Belgian endives with tangerine or blood orange vinaigrette--a sea bass ceviche with coriander and cilantro--Use tough fennel stems as a roasting rack for red snapperI have many more favorites and have read so many more great suggestions and tips, but I will leave them for you to find as you turn the pages.*I received a temporary download of this book from the publisher. I have read all of David Tanis’ books. When I was forced to dramatically downsize my cookbook library, I kept his “A Platter of Figs” and “One Good Dish”. He has helped me become the cook I am today, and my family appreciates it!

Wow, what a cookbook! Delicious recipes from Mr. Tanis. It's geared for people who enjoy shopping for good produce and meats. It's inspiring and new in its approach to shopping, prepping and cooking. A beginning cook might have a bit of a learning curve but even a bit of experience will allow full enjoyment of this appetizing and inspiring book! Go get it!

I enjoyed reading through this book and was excited to try some recipes. My very first recipe choice was the Apple Galette. The directions were a disaster and I am an experienced cook. The book says to roll the dough to approximately 6"X9", then trim off the rough edges. The amount of apples didn't begin to fit. Then when I looked again at the photo it is obvious that the dough is rolled to at least 9"x12"...that is quite a difference. I really can't think of an explanation for the testers or writers to make that kind of mistake. On to the glaze. It says to boil the cores and a few peels for about 15 minutes in the sugar water and then drain. OK so far, but then you realize the glaze is way too watery. I boiled it down for about another 10 minutes and it was finally the right consistency. This is only one recipe, but it is my first one to try and I can only hope that things improve from here.

I love cookbooks that are also books to be read from cover to cover. I’ve ordered this book for 2 other friends whose friendship I value.
