This is a tough rating for me, I enjoyed the authors writing style, editing was good, storyline had potential, but the main characters flaws were strong turn offs for me. Erin had a tough life and I felt bad for her, and really was screaming at her to get out of dodge, go stay at a homeless shelter, go far far away. The only people that treated her somewhat decent was the kids for most of the book. Jack is not the mature head of household that he thinks he is and his realization that he was lashing out at Erin because he loves her, is not love in my opinion. However, she sticks it out and they apparently fall in love with each other. This is the first book in a series, which typically first books seem slower moving for me, but I’m hoping the next book runs at a faster pace. I’m also hoping that the next hero is worthy of the title and the next heroine has a backbone stronger than jello.
Jesus Christ, what the hell did I just read! I thought this was going to be a really great book because of the reviews. Either I’m missing something or there are a whole lot of people out there that love to be depressed for hours on end. All I kept thinking the whole book was “this has to get better right, anytime now...†But nope it never really did get better; the poor female lead was treated like trash from page one, all the way through the book and frankly never got better. I felt my self esteem dropping just reading this book. The only reason I finished this book was because it was fairly well written; but depressing can we just mention that one more time.
I’m only giving this book two stars instead of 1 because the oldest son Ben was the most respectable person at only 15.. I’m a reader i read everything even the dark and sadistic . I came across this book a few times and read the reviews finally decided to give it a try.. i wish o haven’t even wasted my time!! Every person in the book except the teacher Allison and 15 year old Ben were just plain nasty!! And disrespectful!! How Erin stayed like she did is beyond me! I would have just left and figured life out ! She was such a victim willing to sleep with anyone but wasn’t willing to actually try and learn why she couldn’t read! I could not find an ounce of pity for her because she constantly put herself on positions. Jack even though he was nasty at first definitely deserves better and his 8 year old Charlie deserves a but whipping at 8 years old he should not be acting the way he was acting..
My overall end feeling of this book is that it's good and I'll likely keep going with the series. However, I had a hard time getting into the characters in the beginning. As a character I have a hard time relating to Erin, I'm anything but a victim type and generally do not enjoy stories where they are the heroines. In this case though I think it ultimately works. The reality of someone who's suffered from severe dyslexia, in a male dominated world, would create a woman like her who doubts her value and worth at all times. It isn't what we want but it is real! The characters are complex and I think that was why it was a slow start. Developing the story to bring these people to life is difficult.
Erin has nothing after the death of her mother, and she's desperate enough to seek shelter with her no good brother on the ranch where he "works." She catches the eye of the youngest brother/owner and has an affair with him. It's meaningless, but complicates things when she and Jack, the oldest, start falling for each other. Jack's two sons, 8 and 15, also complicate things.(view spoiler)There was so much slut shaming in this book. I got tired of it and Erin's reason for just taking it. I hope some of that is resolved further in the series. I did really like Erin's explanation to Ben, Jack's oldest son, about sex and why some girls are willing to do about anything just so someone will like them. I also like the "non-drama" drama around the potential bad guy. He may return, but I hope not.Heat level a 3/5 flames. There are 10 (!) in this series. I may pick up another one; they are currently on KU.
This book just seemed to get better and better, from beginning to end. I loved the character of Jack, a man that tried to be perfect, but realized that he was only as human as everyone of his brothers. Erin was a woman that had lived a hard life, with her drug-addicted mother, and she had no self esteem. They meet and don’t realize that they were meant to fall in love. After several difficult episodes in their lives, they eventually find love between them and end in a HEA. I recommend this book because it takes ahold of the reader and never lets go until the end. I’m anxious to read more about the Rydell family.
