What Are the Summer Olympics?   Every four years during the summer, athletes from every corner of the globe meet to compete in the Olympics—the greatest sports contest on earth.   For about two weeks, athletes test their skill, their strength, and their luck in more than three hundred events. Arenas for the Olympics become a world stage, with billions of fans following the Games on TV.   There have been generals, princes, and movie stars who have competed in the Olympics. But more often than not, athletes are ordinary young men and women. Except, of course, they are not ordinary. They are champions in running, jumping, swimming, rowing, cycling, gymnastics, tennis, and soccer. Name any warm-weather sport, and most likely it’s been played at the Summer Olympics.   Weeks before the athletes meet, the Olympics have actually already begun.   Where?   In Olympia, Greece, the site of the original, ancient Olympic Games. There, in a valley surrounded by gentle hills, a mirror is held up to the sun. The rays light the flame on a torch.   The Olympic torch will be carried to the city hosting the Games. The journey connects the Games of today to the Games of the ancient past. Long ago, fires burned in front of temples to honor Greek gods. Today the torch is passed from person to person moving by foot, car, train, boat, plane, through countries, across oceans, over mountains. On the way to Beijing, China, in 2008, the torch even reached the highest point in the world, Mount Everest.   But no matter its path, the relay ends at the Olympic stadium of the host city in time for the opening ceremony. The last torchbearer lights a cauldron, a giant bowl sitting atop the stadium. And the Games begin.

Quote from book:"AIDS was hushed up. Many gay men had the disease. Wrongheaded people even thought it was a punishment for being gay."I didn't think this needed to be part of a book for children that's supposed to be about the Olympics.

I thought the book was light on what I really wanted to learn - the history of the olympics and the great stories of courage and triumph that surround the games. The book did not shy away from some of the more darker/tragic moments of the olympics - and in fact, seemed to dwell on them to a fault. Parents of children who are young need to decide if the book's content regarding racism, doping, bombings, murder, politics, etc. is appropriate for their audience - it's not diluted - it's clear and raw. I really wanted to read this book to my young athletes, but thought the content not appropriate for much younger listeners.

In my opinion, this is an inappropriate book for children. Instead of being a historical text on the Olympic Games, it sneaks in a brief authorial commentary on sexuality in an overtly PC fashion. I didn't realize I needed to pre-read these books aimed at 8-year olds.

Personally I felt the AIDS part was covered fine and was appropriate for my 8 year old. I'm not sure about the need to include it, but felt it was written well.

This was a really informative book. I was shocked that there was a t++or attack in 1972 also people used drugs sometimes to male them faster. Still would reccomend this was written by a kid

good

My daughter enjoyed reading this for a book report. The format is easy to follow and the facts were interesting.

Used this book as part of our summer school curriculum, and this was one the kids definitely discussed and asked a lot of questions about.
