Joe Friel is a god in the world of cycling and triathlon training, no doubt. I used an earlier edition of this book maybe 10 years ago and it was helpful in my training as an amateur racer at the time. I've used various plans over the years, first staring with Greg LeMond's plan back in the late 80's and have been racing on-and-off since then. IMO, Joe's model is still relatively old-school. Yes it uses power rather than RPE or Heart Rate, but other than that, this book could have been written 20 years ago. Actually he refers you to another book for any significant analysis of power data, which is kind of disappointing (Coggan's book is the bible for that). The introduction says this book was re-written from scratch but I'm not sure what is new in because it sure seems like it's the same book as before. In the meantime, over the last decade, newer training models have come out to accommodate busy adults who have families and jobs and simply can't put in 10-20 hours a week training for amateur races anymore. I have found those alternative models to be much more effective, but Joe only gives a page of commentary on those and effectively dismisses them. Yet I'm racing stronger on less time now than I did in my twenties when I was putting in 300 miles a week on a typical linear progression plan. Even though I'm not a fan of Chris Carmichael as a person (Lance Armstrong's coach), his time-crunched cycling program will prove much more effective for busy people like me than Joe's plan. That said, if you have 10-20 hours per week to dedicate to training, in addition to time in the gym for weight lifting, then Joe's program is probably the better of the two. If you're going to turn pro, buy this book and Coggan's book. If you're a middle-aged Dad with a racing history looking to stay fit, go read Chris' book instead.
I've been in Ironman for about 15 years and this book is a must for anyone training for a cycle even. I've been slack on using technology to train and this has kick started that effort. I've got all the power meters and gadgets, but understanding and using stuff like TSS is what I lacked.Technology and science has improved so much in the past 10-15 years in sports and this books captures and very clearly explains those details. For years I've been using Training Peaks and never fully understood all the scores and ratings. Now after reading this book I actually am starting to understand some of my training trends graphics which inevitably will help me train smarter.Things I liked about this book:- Detail technology descriptions that were understandable and useable- Format of this book is very clean and extremely well organized- Killer IndexFriel said in his intro that he dumped everything from the previous version except the table of contents.
I’m 65 an have begun to use the “Bible†and the cycling dairy that accompanies this book. Very technical but very well explained. The workouts are tough but it’s good to know you’re on the right track. The gains that have come are amazing given that I’m 65.
Essential reading for any cyclist whether you race or ride for fitness. I didn't buy the Fourth Edition but this one is better written than the Third Edition, with clearer descriptions of periodization and mesocycles. The introduction of Training Stress Scores as a training tool (maybe this was in the Fourth Edition also) is a great addition.
Loving this book. It’s providing some very good info and filling in the big picture and background to a lot of the smaller training anecdotes that float around. On the downside, it’s clear that Friel has worked to keep the content updated, but it can still feel "old" in places; and the writing feels a little textbook like and verbose in places (e.g., chapter intro pages and end summaries). Those are minor quips compared to the broader content quality. I mean, Joe Friel co-founded Training Peaks!!!
I've been using Friel's "Cyclist's Training Bible" to self-coach for about 10 years now - all the way from a Category 5 road racer to Category 1. Never had a coach, just a lot of motivation and Friel's book to guide the way.I have a few older versions of this book, and I was doubtful that it was really "rewritten" - but after paging through it and comparing it to the last version I have (just got the new one today), I can say that it's definitely a new take!It's well worth the read, whether you own a previous edition or not. Whether you have a coach or not. Whether you are an amateur looking to go for Strava KOM's, or an amateur racer looking to go Pro. Crit racers, road racers, hill climbers, time trialists, GC guys - everyone can learn from this book.If you have a coach, they've probably already read this - and if they haven't.. probably time for a new coach! Understand this book, and you can understand why your coach is telling you to rest, why they are telling you to do workout XYZ, why they are telling you you're peaked and ready to win.Yes some of the same old material is in here - periodization, nutrition, training plans, etc - but that material is timeless, and lays the foundation for everything else.
This is a great resource for cyclists. This new edition is fantastic, except it lacks the nutrition chapter in the previous version. Still worth the purchase
Excellent book, it truly is the training Bible. Packed with good information and solid training recommendations. Highly recommended.
