At 18 years old, long before Nanny 911, Suzanne Hansen left the WiIlamette Valley of Cottage Grove to pair her au with late-'80s Hollywood excess... Hansen's just-released tell-all You'll Never Nanny in This Town Again chronicles her caregiving escapades with Debra Winger, Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman, and especially the Ovitz clan." —Portland Monthly magazine“Veterans of the serving class ourselves, we thought we’d seen it all, but You’ll Never Nanny in This Town Again offers an intriguing peek into the never-before-revealed family lives of Hollywood’s elite. Funny and breezy read. Author a little naive about different places they visited (Ovitz house) but I was a nanny as a first job and I remember being too tired to know if I was in in Florence or Trenton.Perfectly captured the lack of personal space in house #1 (emotionally and mentally); and problems with boundaries of all kinds blurring. Great dish on Ovitz (or Eisner - always get names mixed up) and anger and frustration at people who have scads of money ; yet don't seem to appreciate what "scads of money" means and how people who are more "economically challenged" lives have to make choices that aren't as pretty-pretty as those who are cash-y. Perfect depiction of how Nanny (or fellow Nannies) was/were put in dicey or dangerous situations because Rich Lady had no idea where she was sending Nanny to go to pick up something "essential". Reminded me of when our kids were little & had discussion with woman about her kids going to enormously expensive private school (ours went to public) because she "cared" about her kids education and had her "priorities" were in order. (unlike ours, who spent our money on lottery tickets and cheap hooch while our kids went without pencils). I watched her diamond tennis bracelet dip into the plate of curled butter slices & felt very badly we didnt care enough about our kids - that we busted our butts to earn a middle class income & be holding on by skin of our teeth.Things are better now but my kids now go to public high school that private high school kids opt to go to because it's such a god school - so ha ha, butter curl lady! Anyway, this book is a relaxing read; well written & rings true - every page. glad to know Debra Winger is a sweetie.(Sad both "good marriages"described ended in divorce years later.). Again, I was a nanny 20 years ago in Manhattan and everythung in this book could have been written by me (only not well.).

This was a fun read! It's very well written, and never did I feel bored by what was going on. I finally realized this book takes place during the mid-80s and that made it even more interesting. I started looking up online all the people she worked for. Suzy had such easy-access to celebrities back then. I was amazed at how easy it was to just drive into the Paramount Studio lot, walk around looking for the Cheers set, walk in, ask someone where Rhea Pearlman was and walk up to her and start her interview to be Rhea's nanny. Then she followed Rhea up to the Davito's house minutes later, and that was that! She was their nanny! It just seemed so simple - I don't know if things would be that way now. Even the details she gave when she was looking for another nanny job after leaving the Ovitz family were just fascinating. If you are at all interested in Hollywood lifestyles, you will devour this book. I have always wanted to know how a sitcom is put together, and Suzy takes us through the process. When she was working for Rhea Pearlman, 'Cheers' was in its heyday, so Suzy had to go to the set every day. She tells all about that: rehearsals, stand-ins, final tapings. Good stuff.

This story of a young girl's life as a nanny in Hollywood is extremely readable. There is a real ring of truth about the various episodes, and her impressions of the celebrities whose lives she gets to glimpse in the course of her job. Her analysis of her performance as a nanny and her honesty about her own shortcomings serve to enhance the sincerity of this story. And as a long-time fan of Danny de Vito, how nice to know that he is every bit as warm and genuine as his acting roles suggest. Read this for enjoyment and to learn that celebs are just like ordinary people - some lovely and some not so nice.

I just read this. I enjoyed the story. The author was very young at the time she was a nanny so i understand how she couldn't speak up to the first family that hired her. Unfortunately, that family showed that black balling appears to be alive and well in California. I was glad to read that Debra Winger, Danny Devito and Rhea Perlman all treated her well. It sounds like any nanny needs an iron clad contract before working in California.

This book was an extremely refreshing read; it's excellently written, undeniably clever, and legitimately "laugh-out-loud" funny. I looked forward to reading the different "celebrity mom" quotes at the beginning of each chapter, and loved how the writing style drew you in to feel as though- sometimes, unfortunately!- you were really experiencing the events being talked about firsthand, or at least from a true on-looker's perspective. This book had the perfect amount of sarcasm and wit, combined with true emotional and relatable accounts, not to mention a plethora of keen pop-culture references, which, for a book about living in Hollywood, were thoroughly adept. I would absolutely recommend this book if you'd like a glimpse into the real life of dealing with caring for those born into stardom in California. It's not all glitz and glamour!

Contrary to what a few reviewers said, I don't feel that the author violated trust by writing about her personal/professional experiences with the Ovitz family and other celebrity families. There are tons of books written about all kinds of people-famous or not; so it's not like this is anything ground breaking. She only gave an honest account of her brief tenure as a nanny in Hollywood, which few of us will ever know of. But this book is more than just juicy gossip about some Hollywood celebs; you can get those from the internet or from the tabloids. No, it's also about a young woman discovering who she is (and who she's not) - and about how our society often takes for granted the role that caregivers provide, especially those that look after our future generation. Having lived in L.A. for many years and being exposed to the entertainment industry, I applaud her for her honesty, humor and most of all, her ability to have stayed sane in Hollyweird :)
