About the Author
May Theilgaard Watts was well known as a naturalist, teacher, writer, and conservationist in her native Midwest and beyond, through her lectures, classes, books, and newspaper column. She was the first to introduce a broad readership to concepts from ecology. In her books Reading the Landscape of America and Reading the Landscape of Europe, Watts pioneered the idea of studying natural history at the landscape level, considering the biological and cultural forces that have shaped the world around us. Her books are considered classics in landscape interpretation and field ecology. Watts created the first Finders keys as mimeographed handouts for her students at the Morton Arboretum in Illinois. She adapted the dichotomous keys used by botanists, creating highly illustrated keys that amateur naturalists would find fun and easy to use. May Theilgaard Watts led the movement to create the Illinois Prairie Path, the first major rails-to-trials conversion in the United States. She received the Margaret Douglas Medal for Conservation Education from National Garden Club of America, the Arthur Hoyt Scott award in Gardening and Horticulture, and was honored by the Dept. of the Interior and the Audubon Society for her conservation work.

While it is great on its own, pair this with the Audubon field guide for your region and you are totally set. My mom had this book when we were young and I had been wanting to get it for a while. So happy to find it on Amazon. My son is 4 and LOVES learning the trees around us when we hike. This is the easiest and quickest way to identify a tree by it's leaves. The Audubon field guides or other comprehensive books are good for color pics and more info, but this book is the quickest first-line identification tool that I've found. It will cover all common species and many others, but it isn't a dendrology textbook so calibrate your expectations if you're looking for an exhaustive compendium of every tree you may potentially come across.One of the two star reviews said that the book was "not very intuitive". I strongly disagree. It is organized extremely logically. There are a series of (usually) binary choices, eventually leading to species identification. My toddler gets it.
I really like this little book. It's small enough to fit in my back pocket so I can take it with me into the woods. I am an herbalist and a forager, and I have 8 acres of mature woods. In my forays, many times I'll come upon a tree that I don't recognize so I finally bought a book. I don't really trust apps for this purpose because I have found mistakes. This book is really simple to use. I finally identified a Beech on my property that I had been wondering about for years. It actually had Beechnuts! Now I know I can forage those in the fall.This is an excellent book, not only for a beginner, but also for someone more experienced, like me.
I like the book, it's very small and easy to pack in a travel bag to bring outside; I haven't tried to fit it into my pocket (or just carry it). We immediately researched the tree that's in our front yard. Per the results, our tree is an English Holly. I looked up English Holly's on the internet and sure enough there were some pictures of trees that look like ours (and some that didn't). We'll have to research more trees to see what we can find but it's a good way to pass the time for now. It does now, however, give you a lot of information about trees, so if you're looking for in-depth information I would suggest a different identification book.
High quality book- uses a method to ID trees that REALLY works! It was so fun to find a tree on our property that we couldn't ID right away. Through process of elimination we ID the tree correctly using this book. Lots of fun. Using with 5yo little naturalist now, who loves it, too!
I ordered this handy guide on a whim, because it went well with another book that I was ordering at the time. I have been consistently impressed with the accuracy and usability of this pocket guide. Great to take along on a hike or, if you're like me, having recently purchased property with standing trees on it -you can expertly divine the variety you are dealing with. It is a tiny book, which is why it is so affordable -once you have one, you'll wonder how you survived without it!
This is an easy to carry quick reference to help guide you in tree identification through leaf characteristics. If you follow the guide from the front of the booklet it will do a good job of directing you to the tree you are looking at. It is to small to be all inclusive but it is great to start with. It helped me identify several Ash trees last night but I had to reference my much thicker books at home to identify why they looked different from each other.
For such a small book, it packs a lot of trees into it - Eastern North America only. You won't find hybrids, some imports (garden) trees, but it packs in over 100 common trees & can lead anyone into a quick, accurate identification with very little practice. It's small enough to fit into a back pocket without a bulge, which means I'm more likely to have it with me when I want it. That's the biggest plus. The more comprehensive books are OK, but they're always back at the house when I need them or in the way as I walk through the woods & want to take a picture. Not this book!I have several tree ID books & keep thinking I'll outgrow this one, but I haven't yet & I've been using it for a couple of years on a pretty regular basis. Often I'll think I've found a tree that won't be in it, but there it is. It's been so worthwhile that I got a second copy to keep in the truck.
This manual is easy to read picture are great ! The pocket size does great on trips to the woods definetly a great purchase no more wondering what kind of tree your looking at ! Thank you!
