"It Ain't what you don't know that gets you in to trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so." Quote attributed to Mark Twain. If think you know everything about trading, this is the book for you. Trading is an exercise in learning and re-learning humility. And it is always useful to go back to basics. The graphics and charts are well done and informative. There is a recommendation on "improving your listening skills" (page 114.) It is in reference to listening during earnings calls, but we could all use a refresher course on listening. Finally, the book comes with a discount code for Stockcharts.com, the charting site that is used throughout the book. Listen... how can you go wrong?

Very informative,. Easy read..

Great information for the "dummies" just getting into investing.

This is the 4th edition (2017) of this book which attests to its popularity, since its first edition was published in 2004. Lita Epstein is now joined by Grayson Roze (Business Manager at stockcharts.com), as the co-author. The 380-page softcover provides readers new to trading with an introduction to the key elements involved in trading in the stock market. It is not suited for intermediate or advanced traders, as the concepts, techniques, and strategies described are very elementary. The authors divide the book into six parts composed of 22 chapters (2 to 6 chapters to a section). As expected, the first chapter deals with how to get started, tools of the trade, the importance of combining fundamental and technical analysis, and understanding the risk level you feel comfortable with. Then in the next two chapters, there is an introduction to the major stock exchanges along with order types, selecting a brokerage firm by taking into account commissions, trading platform capabilities, margin charges, and whether or no they offer options trading. Chapter 4 discusses the importance of selecting the most appropriate computer setup, and obtaining charting software and selecting trading platforms.Part 2 focuses on fundamental analysis over the course of three chapters. Part 3 then covers the very important subject of technical analysis which is the heart of a solid trading system. The authors review how to use technical analysis, chart reading, recognizing trends, understanding momentum and relative strength indicators.Part 4 begins with the critical issue of money management principles. Lack of attention to this subject will result in traders exiting this potential endeavor quicker than they imagined. The discussion moved on to the importance of combining fundamental and technical strategies to get the best trading results. An introduction to ETFs covers the different ETF families, ETF weighting methodologies, sector rotation based on economic cycles, portfolio construction, and a mention of leveraged and inverse ETFs.Finally, in Chapter 15 (page 241) the authors get involved in the nut-and-bolts of trading, starting with entering and exiting trades, selling stocks short, and avoiding trading regulation pitfalls such as free-riding, margin calls, and patter day trader restrictions. In the latter category, if an individual brokerage account holder is so identified, then that person needs to have $25,000 to continue to day trade.Chapter 16 reviews the critical elements of developing your personalized trading approach. This means determining whether you will be a mechanical, discretionary or trend trader. A brief discussion of selecting tools to work with, back-testing strategies, and the importance of starting and maintaining a trading journal are reviewed. In Part 5, there is a review of swing and day trading in separate chapters. Both of them touch only the surface of these two subjects. Based upon my decades of trading, anyone considering either of these approaches will need to spend much more time studying all the key elements involved, do some paper trading, and consider using a mentor. If these steps are not taken, then the person should not be surprised if they get wiped out. Trading is very difficult and the vast majority of traders fail and move on to other endeavors.Chapter 19 provides a cursory look at future and options. In my view, this subject is very complex and trading these derivatives required years of experience, extensive knowledge, sufficient capital, and an iron stomach. Chapter 20 introduces foreign exchange, another unique and complicated subject well beyond the scope of a beginning trader. Any trader who is not proficient in using technical analysis should stay away from FX trading, in my view.In the last segment of the book, Part 6, the two chapters provide useful guidance on trading for success. Chapter 21 provides a dozen trading mistakes that newbies need to avoid to stay in business. And chapter 22 provide ten trading survival techniques. All this information is very helpful and is often overlooked by inexperienced traders resulting in devastating results. Both these chapters should be read multiple times until the information is seared into the brain of any potential trader.Overall, this book provides the new or potential trader with a broad overview of stock market trading. Readers should not assume they can begin trading by opening a brokerage account after the reading the book and be profitable from the get go. Based on my experience, trading the market is not as simple as it appears, and has cost countless individuals their life savings. If you decide to start trading, start slow with a small amount of money, read and learn the subject matter in-depth, and be very very careful.

I found this book disappointing in terms of contents and level of content. It certainly ranks at the lowest end of any trading book that I have came across. If you know anything about this are then this book is too basic for you.
