Publishers Weekly: This touching debut from Izard shares the story of the creation of the Homeless to Homes program at the Urban Ministry Center in Charlotte, N.C. 'Where are the beds?' formerly homeless writer Denver Moore asked Izard in 2007 while they were working in a soup kitchen, a question that stirred a calling in the author. Izard tells of how she quit her job as a graphic designer to start the Homeless to Homes program to help serve Charlotte's homeless, introducing readers to members of the 'invisible' community who become friends and family to her, among them Ruth, who finally can get some medical attention; Raymond, who rejoices in having his own Christmas tree; and Chilly Willy, whose erratic behavior prevents his participation in the program. Alongside the story of the program, Izard explores how her experiences shifted her faith. Although she believes she hears voices encouraging her, Izard is reluctant to admit she has received a calling. But when she finds herself struggling to secure funding and to convince neighbors to back the project, some lucky coincidences (which she later defines as 'God-instances') begin to sway her faith and make her reconsider the voices in her head. About the Author
Kathy Izard was an award-winning graphic designer for twenty years in Charlotte before launching the pilot program Homeless to Homes for the Urban Ministry Center in 2007. She successfully demonstrated this Housing First program could succeed and led the city-wide effort to build Moore Place which now houses over one hundred chronically homeless men and women. Kathy has written about her path to finding faith and a calling in The Hundred Story Home which received a 2017 Christopher Award. Her community work has also earned the Bank of America Neighborhood Excellence Local Hero Award and the NC Housing Volunteer of the Year Award. First a disclaimer. I bought this book after attending a presentation by Kathy Izard who is as dynamic a speaker as she is a narrative writer. Her talk was organized by her sister Rev. Louise Green, a Minister at the River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Bethesda, Maryland. Louise is a friend and mentor. “The Hundred Story Home†is an inspiring book on many levels. At the most basic it is a very honest and introspective autobiographical account of the personal growth of a successful professional who found herself at mid-age lacking purpose. Kathy Izard takes the reader through what she terms a personal and spiritual transformation during which she discovered, listened to and acted on her inner calling to service. At the next level it is a journey of discovery of the extent of chronic homelessness in Charlotte, North Carolina and the absence of resources to do more than provide palliative care. Izard’s spontaneous decision to organize a fundraiser for the Charlotte Urban Ministry Center soup kitchen put her in contact with homeless advocate Denver Moore. In November 2007 after touring the Center Moore floored her with a question and a challenge: “Where are the beds?†“Are you going to do something about it?†Izard responded by transforming herself from a graphic designer and part time volunteer into a dynamic networking advocate. She became a moving force in securing housing for 100 chronically homeless Charlotte residents, 85 of whom live in a purpose built apartment complex integrating medical and counseling services that opened in 2012. There is a third and even more personal level to “The Hundred Story Home.†mental illness. Even as Izard details her struggles to come to terms with Moore’s challenge, figure out how to raise over $10,000,000 and overcome a hostile neighborhood association she is grappling with the legacy of her mother’s bipolar disorder. In 1969 Kathy Izard was 6 when her mother had her first breakdown. She was 22 when her mother was diagnosed and began an effective medication regime. Izard writes candidly of her mother’s struggles, her father’s devoted care for his wife until his death and her struggle to overcome the pain and emotional damage of a lost childhood. One of the most moving chapters is Izard’s account of her sisters and her decision to move her mother into a retirement community and her mother’s absolute sense of loss and homelessness once the decision is carried out. Izard skillfully weaves this all too common family story into the broader story of serving the Charlotte homeless community. In sharing her mother’s mental illness and its impact on her family Kathy Izard ends the book with transition from a life focused on housing the chronic homeless. Izard found a competent successor to continue to carry the Moore House mission forward. She partnered with friends in Charlotte who raised $25,000,000 to “build HopeWay, the regions’s first and only nonprofit residential mental health treatment center†which opened in 2016. Through this book and speaking engagements she is carrying both missions forward.The book concludes with a useful list of contact points.
The Hundred Story Home is a beautifully written and inspiring book, and I couldn't put it down. Kathy Izard lets us into her life in a real and vulnerable way. She reminded me to always listen to that strong whisper inside me, even if what it's telling me seems impossible.With four kids, a job as a graphic designer, and zero experience in real estate and construction, she took on a seemingly impossible task of building homes for our homeless. But she makes it seem possible because she is so open about how scared she was and how unprepared she felt. Miracles occurred in the process because she never lost hope in her dream.This book is a perfect book club selection or a beach read because it inspires conversation about how we can all be our best selves by following that inner wisdom and calling that each of us has. It's a book about finding and following our true purpose in life, even when we feel totally unprepared for the task. Kathy Izard really does make me want to Do Good and Love Well! I cannot recommend this book enough.
This is the most inspiring book that I have read in a very long time. I discovered this book by listening to an interview Kathy Izard participated in with the "Christopher Closeup" show via @SiriusXM The Catholic Channel (129). Her heartening interview on homelessness moved me to buy her book and hear her real story. In this book, Kathy shows us how important it is to give back to your community and to make a difference about the causes that you believe in. Every state and city in America has a homeless population and Kathy's story documents how your community can come together to help overcome chronic homelessness by using ways that have proven to be successful. She shows us how to listen to that inner voice, that whisper that we might be hearing, to trust that God is with us and to finally take that first step and volunteer. Reading Kathy's story will change you and then it is up to you to make a difference and change your self.
This book was recommended to me by a complete stranger. As if that is not odd enough, I impulsively ordered it on the spot (Thank you Amazon App).Halfway through the book, I find out that this book references another book that also had a deep impact on my life. A coincidence or a revelation? I will order and share this book with a number of friends who came to mind as I read this beautiful story. Not only is it a great read for those of us who know we want to do something but haven't quite figured out what that 'something' might be. It's also a beautiful reminder that sometimes our unexpected struggles are also our greatest reward and purpose. Most of all, it reminds us how much we are all the same, regardless of finances, status, or education. We all crave community, to belong and to be connected. The author challenges you to get outside of the boxes we create for ourselves and to connect with the struggles, defeats and the pain that ultimately bring purpose to our lives. I will read this book often as a reminder that my journey is not over.
I enjoyed reading this book immensely. I related to Kathy's story in so many ways and I'm so grateful to learn even more about what led to the building of Moore Place. The book is very easy to read and the characters are easy to know and love. The story is truly amazing and I am so proud of all the Good that was and is being done in Charlotte.
The book challenges us to think about homelessness and the people trapped in it. Clearly discussing the causes, as well as presenting a verifiable solution. But even more so, Kathy shares her own family's struggles with mental illness, which personalizes the reality that these incredible challenges can happen to anyone.But something can be done. People are doing it. We are challenged to do likewise.
